For more than six years, the 1200 building at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School sat untouched like a time capsule, with its classrooms still filled with dried blood and students' strewn papers. This week, the site of the Parkland, Florida, mass shooting will be torn down -- a move two grieving moms say is long overdue. The demolition will start Thursday, timed for immediately after the last day of school, which was on Monday, according to Broward County Public Schools.

First of all, a lot more Americans were paying attention to Trump's trial than to Biden's. According to a YouGov/CBS News poll from June 5-7, only 24 percent of U.S. adults said they had heard or read a lot about Biden's trial, and another 38 percent said they had heard or read some about it.

The Federal Reserve decided to hold its benchmark interest rate steady on Wednesday, prolonging an aggressive fight against inflation despite fresh data hours earlier that showed a slight cooldown of price increases. Price increases eased last month, U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data showed, but progress on inflation has remained modest since late last year. The Fed retreated from its previous forecast of three rate cuts this year, instead saying that it anticipates one rate cut in 2024.

Biden, Zelenskyy to sign US-Ukraine security agreement at G7 summit
President Joe Biden and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will sign a bilateral security agreement at the G7 summit Thursday that will pledge long-term defense and security cooperation. "We want to demonstrate that the U.S. supports the people of Ukraine, that we stand with them, and that we'll continue to help address their security needs, not just tomorrow but out into the future," national security adviser Jake Sullivan told reporters aboard Air Force on his way to the G7 summit site of Bari, Italy. A U.S. official tells me this is an "executive agreement," which means a future president could withdraw from it.

Gaza protest, vandalism targets Palestinian UN Mission in New York
A New York City protest tied to the war in Gaza prompted a large police response early Wednesday and the closure of a block on the city's Upper East Side, where the Palestinian Mission to the United Nations was vandalized and demonstrators littered the street with leaflets smeared with red paint and encouraging the intifada, according to police. Other vandalism incidents suspected to be linked to the protest were discovered in four other areas of the city overnight, including at the homes of the Jewish director of the Brooklyn Museum and several of the museum's board members, officials said.

One person was fatally shot in connection with a bus hijacking that prompted a police chase through two Georgia counties on Tuesday, authorities said. The incident began at approximately 4:35 p.m. ET in downtown Atlanta, when police responded to a report of gunfire on a Gwinnett County Transit bus and a "possible hostage situation," the Atlanta Police Department said. "Upon the officers' arrival at the scene, the bus fled the location, and a pursuit ensued," the Atlanta Police Department said in a press release.

The State Department has launched a beta program for passport renewal applications that will be open to the public, according to senior officials at the department. According to the officials, the program will begin by accepting a small number of online applications each day, with that limited number gradually ramping up as time goes on to ensure the State Department "can track any issues that arise and address them quickly and continuously improve the experience for the American people." "The goal of online passport renewal is to save Americans time and effort, making it more convenient to renew their U.S. passports," one senior State Department official said.

Man shoots, injures 3 people at Atlanta shopping center; off-duty officer stops threat
A gunman shot and injured three people at an Atlanta mall before an off-duty officer stepped in and stopped the threat, according to authorities. Jeremy Malone, 34, "got into an altercation with a man" at the Peachtree Center Mall around 2:15 p.m. Tuesday and then allegedly pulled out a handgun and shot the man he was fighting with, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. As people fled for safety, an off-duty Atlanta police officer confronted the armed suspect and shot him, Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum said.
