Dallas Cowboys. Key additions: *crickets*. The Cowboys were largely hamstrung in free agency due to a lack of cap space, and then didn’t really do much in the draft to get better. Yes, I know Zeke is back, but it’s not 2018. Hoping for him to return to being a 1,000 yard back is blind hope, with absolutely nothing but faith to back it up. It’s a make-or-break year in Dallas, and the tea leaves are swirling in a way that could indicate that it’s all about to collapse. This 12-5 team a year ago got bounced by the Packers in the Wild Card, and didn’t get any better. It would shock people if this team regressed, but the stage is set for a seven win season and then tearing this apart and trying again. Sorry Cowboys fans.

Barring a repeat of that faceplant, the Cowboys figure to face a far more difficult path to repeating as the division champions.

I wasn’t the biggest fan of Shipley, but that’s because I didn’t see him as a feature back and I wouldn’t draft backup running backs until day 3. Remember that a lot of rankings are just down to your philosophy. I like to prioritize explosive players who can excel on limited touches as backups, whereas Shipley is more of a chain mover. I wanted the Eagles to target more of a low-touch explosive back (such as Tyrone Tracey) in the 4th round, whereas I see Shipley as more of a ‘safe’ pick. I think Shipley is a solid backup, who doesn’t have any elite traits. I think Shipley (along with Kenny Gainwell) could keep the Eagles’ running game ticking along if Saquon Barkley misses any time, but I don’t think he will do anything special. When I’m ranking running backs, I am always considering fantasy rankings (as I play a lot of dynasty) and Shipley isn’t someone I see as a feature back so I was slightly lower on him than some of the other backs in this tier.

Wide receiver (6): A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith, DeVante Parker, Ainias Smith, Johnny Wilson, Britain Covey. The Eagles signed two uninspiring veteran receivers this offseason in DeVante Parker and Parris Campbell. I believe one of those guys will make the roster simply for their experience, and Parker offers more than Campbell, in my opinion. There’s some question as to whether Covey should make the roster or not, since the Eagles drafted three players — Cooper DeJean, Will Shipley, and Ainias Smith — who were good returners in college. We got into deeper detail on that debate here, but the CliffsNotes version is that college return success doesn’t always translate to the NFL, and Covey was arguably the best punt returner in the NFL last season. It would be silly to cut him and put the return team’s success at risk. As for the two rookies, Smith will very likely contribute in some way on special teams, while Wilson may not. As such, Smith is a safer bet to make the roster if they only keep five receivers, but I have Wilson on for now.

3. NFC East. The Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys carry the might of the NFC East. The two teams combined for 23 regular-season wins in 2023. The Cowboys won the NFC East on the back of Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb becoming one of the best QB-WR duos in the NFL, with Prescott earning a 90.8 grade and Lamb earning a 91.1 grade. The overall talent on the Cowboys’ roster means they’ll be one of the big players in the NFC once again. The same can be said for the Eagles. Jalen Hurts’ 86.4 grade was a top-10 figure at the quarterback position despite some issues, and the Eagles’ roster is strong. Vic Fangio’s installment as defensive coordinator will boost a defense that gave up a ton of points. The Washington Commanders will afford themselves some hope for the future after drafting Jayden Daniels with the No. 2 overall pick but feel like a team in transition after losing some big hitters, such as Montez Sweat and Chase Young, in recent times. The New York Giants limped to a 6-11 record and lost Saquon Barkley in free agency, but a big trade for Brian Burns, as well as the selection of wide receiver Malik Nabers, will help them in the long term. However, they’ll only go as far as Daniel Jones can take them.

4. Tough early on, but easier down the stretch. While the overall 2023 record of the Cowboys’ opponents is close to .500, the distribution of tough vs. easy opponents isn’t evenly spread out. The Cowboys have some tough matchups early on, but it gets a lot easier down the stretch. Seven of their first 10 opponents had double-digit wins last year, while only one of their final seven opponents reached 10 wins a year ago. What’s up with Daniel Jones? Will the quarterback, rehabbing from a torn ACL and under pressure after a horrid 2023 season, do anything on the field? Jones is about six months out from surgery to repair the ACL, with an expected recovery to return to play of eight to 10 months. All indications from the Giants have been that they expect Jones, who may face a fight from Drew Lock for his starting job, to be ready for training camp and ultimately the start of the 2024 season. Could Jones do some on-field work during OTAs? Perhaps throwing routes to receivers during individual and install portions of practices? Jones said in April that he has been moving and throwing in “quarterback-specific drills.”

I have to think that Brian Johnson had a lot to say about the decision to bring OZ to Washington. I believe that he and Kliff Kingsbury will have a plan to both play and target Zaccheaus much more than the Eagles did last year. I am guessing that Johnson didn’t have complete autonomy under Siriani in ‘23, and that, if he had, he would have done more with his multi-talented receiver. In his 5-year career, Olamide Zaccheaus has caught 61% of his targets at an average of 14.3 yards per reception. He has 10 touchdowns and 72 first downs on 104 career receptions. No one is suggesting that Zaccheaus will one day have a bust in Canton, but he is a proven, productive, and multi-positional backup on a team that has almost no proven depth behind Terry McLaurin. OZ is also a 4-phase special teams player with 510 career special teams snaps; this is an important element of the game for a WR4. I believe in OZ, and I think you should too.
