No they don't. Only ones to offer dry ADSL service are covad resellers which is very very recent.

SBC may down the road offer dry adsl service. Take a look at the front page and the speakeasy announcement (covad reseller) and you can see user opinions and pricing.

Dry ADSL will always be more expensive then line shared ADSL just a FYI.

I thought the point of "dry dsl" was to eliminate the cost of a normal POTS line but if this "dry dsl" is gonna be so expensive, what would it have over normal dsl? Seems a bit pointless to pay such and such for dsl from one company when you can get dsl and POTS from another. Honestly, I don't know why people wouldn't want a POTS line. It's always there just in case...

Main reason is a lot of people do not like the ILEC and people won't get DSL since they have to get a POTS line. Most those people just have a cell phone and either wireless or cable internet. Since that's there only choice they will stick to it but with Dry ADSL coming many people would switch to it that for better stability.

I just can't understand why ppl don't want a pots line. I don't want a cell phone at all. I'm not important enough to have to be available 24/7 and a cell phone would just interrupt my working.
I love having a phone, phone number in the phone book etc.
It's a sign of long term stability and community. With the "do not call" laws now, I'm not afraid to answer the phone. Cell phones are come and go, same as the ppl who use them and don't have pots. How long does a cell phone number last? Ppl chance cell services, phones etc. and the number changes with it. That may be desirable for a drug dealer, but not for me. Just my two pennies.

But since SBC won't unbundle POTS from DSL, they're keeping you from moving your local phone service to newer local VOIP carriers like Vonage. I mean, you can certainly do it today, but paying for an unused voice line is silly just to keep your data line open. SBC loves it that way of course.

SBC wants to hike local rates again in Illinois, supposedly they wanted $9 a line but the ICC is going to cap them to $3.75 or something smaller. The new VOIP carriers are offering much more service for a way lower price, even a flat fee (Vonage is currently offering all the local and long-distance you want for $29.99 a month)

SBC just got told in California that they have to offer DSL separate from voice so maybe there's hope.

And by the way not everyone that uses a cellphone is a drug dealer. There's a growing number of young people that never get a voice line at all, they're going totally cellular. The rate plans are more affordable and no more "this is my home # this is my office # this is my cell#". With the number portability rules in place you can keep your phone number forever.

Isn't "dry DSL" just SDSL ?? Well, I suppose you don't want the SLAs that come with SDSL... and therefore higher cost...

Nope. "Dry loop" ADSL is not SDSL.

Re: SBC Taxes are the problem

It's the taxes and fees which cause the problem. What other industry is taxed at 125%+ ??? No wonder most telecoms are in bankruptcy.

I used to think Canadian taxes were bad.

****
Local phone = $13.86
****
Federal charge: $5.35
State Charge: $1.03
911 charge $1.12
Emergency 911 Operational charge $3.20
Federal USF $2.23
state sales tax (6%) $1.47
federal tax (3%) $.74

In my opinion, any business that utilizes VOIP, like Vonage, is absolutely insane if they do not have AT LEAST one POTS line as a back-up. Server crash, power outage, virus, internet connectivity, etc could happen at anytime and you would be up a creek.

If SBC wants to survive into the next decade they will have no choice but to offer a high-speed connection without ties to a POTS line.

Corona has the right answer: Not yet.

Not to mention the time-tested, ever-popular "vanished without a trace overnight with the corporate cash".

I've though it rather amusing when someone puts their business's voice service on an unregulated carrier no matter who it is. Relying on cellular service is bad enough. Tying it to a VoIP startup with the whole thing riding on a consumer-grade connection like ADSL or cable is insane.
