Walter F. Donahue died last Thursday night. He leaves impressive credentials 70 years a man of God, 43 years a priest of the Roman Catholic Church. Fr. Donahue the title "Monsignor" still comes reluctantly to many tongues was also a man of St.

Mark's Parish in Dorchester. Walter Donahue took his degree from the College of the Holy Cross to St. John's Seminary and was ordained by William Cardinal O'Connell in 1930. He served briefly in several parishes before moving to St. Mark's Rectory on Roseland street in Dorchester in December 1932.

He stayed for 22 years. St. Mark's was a middle-class parish in those Depression years. There were fine houses in every section and devout Catholics in nearly every home. There was work to be done, sure, but it couldn't be termed a difficult ministry by today's standards.

Fr. Donahue was always around, if unobtrusively. That was his manner. You could count on him. Moderator of the Ladies' Sodality, among other things, for those 22-plus years, Fr.

Donahue established a base with the mothers of the parish that enabled him to keep an eye on things religious and social, and to take action when necessary. The action was taken with little fanfare. That was his manner. In 1955, Fr. Donahue was appointed pastor of St.

Joseph's Parish in Lincoln. His people at St. Mark's were effusive in their congratulations; he was nonplussed by the fuss, embarrassed by the gifts. He had done his job for Christ, quietly, effectively. He needed no thanks, he wanted no acclaim.

Fr. Donahue had served for almost 11 years as a curate under St. Mark's founder, Rev. John Daly. He then worked for 11 more years with Msgr.

Patrick J. Lydon before leaving for Lincoln. After moving on to St, Margaret's in Saugus in 1957 and working there until the spring of 1961, Fr. Donahue found himself back at St. Mark's as administrator and then pastor in May after the death of Msgr.

Lydon. But it was not 1932, and St. Mark's had changed. The tightly knit parish society he had left in 1955 LATE DEATH NOTICES CASEY In Brighton, June 24, 1973, Richard beloved husband of Freda A. (toiler I.

r.J eall TA Moskow. Brf rhes.nut Tern, 642-8040. MSGR. DONAHUE 1961 photo was slowly, almost imperceptibly, unraveling. You can get man opinions about the problems Fr.

Donahue and his fellow Roman Catholic pastors faced in the sixties. It was rougher, perhaps, on those who ran inner-city parishes. Fr. oDnahue's fief-dom in south Dorchester was, if not seedy, only a pale imitation of the mid- die-class neighborhood of 30 years before. The works of Pope John and the Vatican Council have had an ambivalent effect on many Catholics.

Their Church was being altered to a degree that many devout worshippers found abhorrent. Pastors were getting directives on the new liturgy and new rubrics every week, it seemed. Pope John's "fresh air" was hardly that to many of Msgr. Donahue's congregation. He sensed this resistance, but his devotion to his ministry made him press on.

Msgr. Donahue gave his all to St. Mark's for some 10 years, facing up to a drastic decline in Mass attendance, Communions and confessions, and a drastic increase in the costs of running a grammar school, a convent, a rectory and a church. Then, in March of last year, he suffered the first of an ultimately-fatal series of strokes. He never again personally took hold of the throttle at St.

Mark's. The purpose of this essay is to acknowledge that for fully half his life a good man offered his all to the parishioners of St. Mark's in Dorchester. He did things quietly, with; sublime modesty and telling sincerity. He asked no thanks.

That was his manner. Requiescat in pace. Thomas Mulvoy Globe Staff Paul Mahony Sales representative BARRINGTON, R.I. Paul T. Mahony, 58, of 19 Chapman lane, a sales representative well known in the Greater Boston area, died suddenly last, night at his home.
