When you file a claim for benefits, the state will contact your former employer. It will want to ensure that you meet the requirements to collect unemployment benefits. In New Jersey, you will be eligible for unemployment benefits if you meet the following requirements: 1.
How many weeks of unemployment benefits can I currently receive? Those who meet the requirements for traditional unemployment insurance may receive benefits for up to 26 weeks during a one-year period.

For 2023, the maximum weekly benefit rate is $830.

If you were fired or discharged from your job, you may not be eligible for benefits. A claims examiner will determine if there was any misconduct connected to your separation. There are two types of misconduct: misconduct and gross misconduct.
If you have been working in a regular job for at least 20 weeks and lose that job - through no fault of your own - you may be eligible for state unemployment benefits. You can file a claim at your local Employment Services Office (listed in your phone book).
New: Employer online response process
If you received a letter in the mail that is directing you to fill out a form online, then you will have 10 days to log in and respond to the questionnaire. This response will count as your fact finding, and we will only contact you if additional information is needed.
Is there a 13 week extension for unemployment in New Jersey?
The increase occurred because the state's three-month average unemployment rate met or exceeded eight percent. These extended unemployment benefits will remain in effect in New Jersey for a minimum of 13 weeks, at which time the three-month average unemployment rate will be recalculated.

In November 2022, Governor Phil Murphy signed an amendment to the New Jersey Unemployment Compensation Law intended to streamline the benefits process. The amendment, which took effect on July 31, 2023, expands the employer's reporting obligations and increases penalties for failure to abide by its terms.

If you receive any unemployment benefits to which you are not entitled, you will be required to repay those benefits, otherwise known as “overpayments.” A determination notice will be sent to you explaining the reason for your overpayment. Also, a notice will be sent to you stating the amount you were overpaid.
Fifty percent of the benefits are paid from federal funds and 50 percent are paid from the New Jersey Unemployment Trust Fund.

Minimum Wage in New Jersey 2023
This minimum wage rate is greater than the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour. Employers are required to pay their employees the higher state minimum wage, which in this case is $14.13 per hour.
Claimants are paid 85% of their average weekly wage, up to the maximum weekly benefit rate set for that calendar year. In 2023, the maximum weekly benefit rate is $1,025 per week. In 2024, the maximum weekly benefit rate is $1,055 per week.
Although the state of New Jersey does not tax Unemployment Insurance benefits, they are subject to federal income taxes. To help offset your future tax liability, you may voluntarily choose to have 10% of your weekly Unemployment Insurance benefits withheld and sent to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
Is unemployment paid weekly in NJ?
The amount of unemployment benefits you may receive each week is your Weekly Benefit Rate (WBR). The amount will be 60% of the average weekly earnings during your base year period, up to a maximum amount. The maximum amount may change each year. Program guidelines and benefits may change.
You may be eligible for Temporary Disability Insurance benefits if your physical or mental illness or injury prevents you from working and was not caused by your work. You may apply for Family Leave Insurance benefits if you are bonding with a newborn, newly adopted, or newly placed foster child.
You should file your claim immediately after you stop working full-time, even if you are getting severance pay. Payments that do not extend employment include severance payments based on years of service with an employer.
If your claim for benefits is denied, you must file an appeal with the New Jersey DWLD Appeal Tribunal within seven days of receiving the determination letter (or ten days from the mailing date on that letter). You may file your appeal in person, by fax, or by mail.
In order to receive benefits, and continue to get them each week you, must also be: able to work. actively seeking work.
